Are you aware of your fertility? (Rerun)

The vagibonds are all moving this week so we took a break but thought we’d replay our first guest episode! New episodes will start back next week.

It’s our first guest! This week our friend Susie Koch joins us to discuss non-hormonal birth control – namely natural family planning. Also known as the rhythm method aka fertility awareness.

Antibodies! How the “Man with the Golden Arm” saved 2.4 million babies

This week Katee, Corbin, and Dave talk about a topic that has been floating around the warm and fuzzy news cycle. James Harrison, an Australian given the Moniker “the man with the golden arm” has recently retired from his super hero status after donating blood since he was 18 years, with experts estimating he saved the lives 2.4 million babies. The Vagibonds talk about how this was possible and take a dive into blood groups, antibodies, and immune systems.

The current state of abortion

It’s our birthday! Corbin & Katee are doctors now! But all is not so happy with the world…

A few weeks ago, Iowa became the most restrictive state in the nation for a woman’s right to choose. Fortunately, South Carolina didn’t. And on May 25th, Irish citizens will be voting on whether or not to repeal the 8th amendment to their constitution. Choosing to keep the amendment would continue to equate the life of a pregnant person with the life of the fetus causing patients who desire termination to leave their home country for care. Choosing to repeal the amendment would allow abortion to be legal in Ireland for the first time ever. Join the newly graduated doctors as we discuss the current state of abortion in the world.

The Virginity Myth

This week on the podcast Katee, Corbin, and Dave welcome another guest! This week on the Vagibinds is Rose Olson, she is a fourth year medical student and research intern at the WHO. She recently published a paper that reviewed the scientic evidence for so called “virginity testing,” a practice in many countries throughout the world of using a physical exam to inspect a woman or girls hymen to determine whether she is a “virgin” or not. Spoiler: it’s not scientifically sound. We talk about the cultural and societal implication of this exam, the control in which it exerts over women and their bodies, as well as what the word virginity even means.

What Comprehensive Sex Ed Looks Like: Our Whole Lives

Alison Oliver is a sexuality educator at the university level, and also for the Unitarian Universalist Society’s sex ed program known as Our Whole Lives.  Unlike what most of us get in schools, public or private, OWL is comprehensive.  Even the most detailed conversation with one’s parents can’t hope to cover everything OWL does in its 25 weeks.  Katee, Corbin, and Dave visit with Alison to get a feel for just what comprehensive means, and how young people can get more comfortable with sexuality as something that exists for all people, throughout their entire existence, from cradle to grave.
